2. The Celebration of Svantovít (1912)

In this swirling mass of white-robed figures, the Slavs gather to celebrate the harvest before the fertility god Svantovít (holding a drinking horn). While this theme captures the specific rituals of the Baltic Slavs, it evokes the deeply rooted traditions of pagan Slav-land. Blissed-out dancers sway in a trance, swinging linden branches. Hovering above, their gods join them. The Slavs are sacrificing bulls to Svantovít. But their peace is about to be shattered, in the form of Thor (upper left), who arrives with wolves. It’s the Slavs’ eternal enemy—the Germanic tribes.

When you gaze into the eyes of the forlorn-looking young mother (at bottom center, echoing the woman in the first painting), it seems that the Slavs are forever destined to be refugees.
